Erwin Lester Inabinett papers, 1946-2011.

Papers, 1946-1980, of E.L. Inabinett, consisting of professional correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, lecture notes, and academic writings (102 items, 12 photographs, and 1 volume). Correspondence includes letters of recommendation from Pepperdine University faculty (Dec. 1949) and messages of congratulation upon his appointment as Director of the South Caroliniana Library from Miss Jessie Ham (13 June 1959), a colleague from University of South Carolina Libraries, and Sen. Strom Thurmond (29 June 1959). Correspondents include Courtney Siceloff (17 May 1962) of the Penn Center of the Sea Islands (Saint Helena Island, S.C.), USC President Robert L. Sumwalt (4 March 1960) , S.C. Governor Robert E. McNair (15 Sept. 1970), and professors Bradley D. Bargar (11 Sept. 1970) and George C. Rogers, Jr. (19 Sept. 1971), of the USC Department of History. An essay entitled "The Lawton Family of Robertville S.C.," prompted letters of thanks from Thomas Oregon Lawton (11 June 1963) and Robert E.H. Peeples (29 June 1963). Twelve photographs include images of Inabinett and others during naval service in World War II, undated images of Inabinett at South Caroliniana Library, photographs of Inabinett with Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Butler at the South Caroliniana Library (Sept. 1980), and one undated image of USC History professor Dr. R.L. Meriwether. Other items include discharge papers from the U.S. Navy; diploma, 1950, from Pepperdine University; a program, 1961, for the opening of the Kendell Memorial Room in the west wing of the South Caroliniana Library; academic papers: "William Gilmore Simms as an Historian"; "The United States and the German Debt Default, 1933-1939"; "Regionalism in Contemporary U.S. Painting" (1949); "McDonald Furman As Seen Through His Papers"; and "The Lawton Family of Robertville, S.C."; and a volume containing unattributed lecture notes (1950-1951) written in an unidentified hand for teaching the course, South Carolina History, 1670-1876. Also includes obiturary for Thomas Daniel Porter (1928-2011), published, 26 July 2011, in The State newspaper.
